Friends of Masaya is a small part of a larger whole. The larger whole is called Bridges to Community. They have a website at bridgestocommunity.org. We invite you to visit there to enjoy the big picture. But Friends of Masaya is based in Masaya, Nicaragua. More specifically, it operates north of Masaya in a rural area which used to be all farm land, worked by a co-operative. Now it is a collection of small villages. and still a lot of farmland. The needs there are many. The poverty there is great. Friends of Masaya serves about ten of those villages. We started working there in 2000 right after the July tremors which left most of the tiny, poorly built houses in pieces on the ground or dangerous to live in. We build simple, strong houses which the people help us build and then they purchase for half of our construction costs. |
They pay $10 a month. Through this money and gifts from individuals and churches in the states and funding raised by Bridges to Community we have built 150 houses in four years. And the work continues. We offer this website for those who have come to work in Masaya and want to stay informed as to the progress. Or for anyone who wants to know a bit more about the work. The housing work has led to other projects as well. We will inform you of that work as well. Look around for information and photos of the kids in the villages, the computer school that is up and running, the churches we have been able to assist, the colorful personalities of our work crew, photos and profiles and updates of our homeowner families....and more...... |
